Hands on Pruning – Zachary Leonard, Vermont Certified Horticulturalist

Try your hand at pruning. Learn the principals of pruning and then do it yourself. This hands-on workshop teaches the best ways to prune your trees and shrubs (with a focus on fruit trees). Bring your pruning tools and your questions. (If you don’t have good tools don’t buy them before you check out our state of the art tools we offer in our Nursery store)

Grafting, hardwood cuttings, layering, stooling methods
April 26, 2009 1-3 PM

The founder of Elmore Roots will be showing the tried and true ways to make more plants from your friends plants or to increase plantings of your own favorites. Bring your own grafting knife and/or pruners if you have them or you can find some in our nursery store.

Edible Alternatives Sunday, June 28, 2009 1-3PM - Effie Elfer, Hardy Plant Specialist

So many of the conventional landscape designs and plantings are for our eyes, with color and shape, but why not make them for our mouths as well, with taste and flavor!
Many fruiting plants are ideal for landscaping our yards. Come join us in exploring the diversity of alternatives that are available. Fruiting plants are multi-functional, giving seasonal interest in spring with their abundant bloom, summer fruit harvests and often great fall color. So why plant just for your eyes when you can satisfy your belly, too!

Yoga for gardeners Sunday, July 12, 2009
Margaret Pitkin, Registered Yoga Teacher and Landscaper

This class will be composed of simple, healing postures for the entire bouquet of common gardening aches and pains. We will work to find freedom from pain so that we may more deeply connect to the joy of our outdoor labors and the exquisite beauty of the garden. No previous yoga experience necessary.

Sense of Place Sunday, July 26, 1-3PM - Effie Elfer, Hardy Plant Specialist
A workshop in tree identification and getting to know native plants.

Summer is an ideal time to walk in the woods or hike on a trail taking in the flora and fauna that make up our backyard ecosystems! WE hope to introduce you to some species that you may already know but also show you how to identify other species that are more elusive. We will create our own personal field guides as we go! Come with observant eyes, lots of questions and a readiness to explore!

Successful Blueberry Growing and Tasting – Elmore Roots Staff
August 23, 2009 1-3 PM

Elmore Roots staff will show you how to establish your own home blueberry patch. Soil requirements, fertility needs and best plant selection, spacing and mulching will be covered. We will also get to taste the results! Learn what works so you don't make the mistakes we made at first.

Yoga and watercolor painting - Sunday, September 13, 2009
Gabriel Tempesta, Resident Artist and Margaret Pitkin, Registered Yoga Teacher and Landscaper

To paint is to become filled to brimming by the beauty of the world around you – so full that this beauty must pour out as expression, as art. Through the practice of simple yoga postures we will learn to become more deeply sensitive to the ocean of beauty that lies all around us. Through the practice of watercolor painting we will learn techniques for expressing the subtleties of this beauty on the page.

No Deer Here – Zachary Leonard, Vermont Certified Horticulturalist
October 18, 2009 1-3 PM

Learn more about deer and their habits so as to better exclude them from your orchard and gardens. Repellants, deterrents and physical barriers will be discussed and demonstrated in detail. See what we have done that really works to maintain our plants' health and size by paying attention to what keeps deer away from them.

Most workshops are from 1-3 PM on Sundays at Elmore Roots Nursery
